Educational institutes around the world are being disrupted. When information is freely available online, formal degrees are less and less necessary for gainful employment, when study partners are found outside of campuses, what is the role of education?
The natural way to learn
When in your working life have you been disconnected from information sources and colleagues, and asked to solve problems in a limited time frame without any external help?
Schools need to take into use the learning methods professionals use constantly. These methods, such as progressive inquiry and collaborative knowledge building, are common practice in working life, but are rarely seen in formal education. Primary schools in Finland are an exception to the rule, as they have focused on team, project and design based work for decades.
LifeLearn is designed in Finland and is based on principles of Finnish primary education and those of meaningful professional learning. While LifeLearn can be misused, its design will nudge teachers towards more collaborative and social methods of teaching and learning. Empowering pupils to contribute to learning paths and move fluidly between roles of novice and expert, LifeLearn facilitates natural professional learning methods. This will improve learning results in the subject areas being studied, but will also equip pupils with the skills and working methods they will need when they become professionals.
The social layer around courses
Many institutes already have their LMS and courseware. If they’re happy with their solution, they can keep using them. LifeLearn can still provide an additional social layer around those courses, where students can discuss on a meta level: What courses should I take? What can I recommend? Why did I pick a certain course? What was the best takeaway from a course? As this social layer is open to outsiders, it also works as an effective recommendation channel whereby satisfied students bring more customers by recommending their experiences to their friends.
